A memorial with radiance

Carved in stone and yet deceptively real – the world-famous lion monument in the city of Lucerne has impressed people from near and far for many years. But the imposing stone lion is more than “just” a monument. Depending on your perspective, it is considered a memorial, a work of art or a memorial. And as a proud landmark of the city of Lucerne.

The “Lion of Lucerne” is located in the middle of a rock grotto in an idyllic park in the city of Lucerne and is visited by around 1.4 million people every year. But very few people know: the story behind this impressive work is a sad one and invites you to take a journey back in time.

KKL Lucerne

Where art, architecture and Lake Lucerne merge

Sensational acoustics right on Lake Lucerne – that’s what the Lucerne Culture and Congress Center, or KKL for short, offers. The heart of the KKL Lucerne is the unique concert hall. The hall is one of the best in the world and is famous for its excellent acoustics and breathtaking architecture as well.

The Lucerne Culture and Congress Center, now the pride of many Lucerne residents, has been an integral part of the lake shore since 2000. In its place previously stood the Art and Congress House, designed by Armin Meili in 1933, in which the first International Music Festival took place in 1938.

World class on Lake Lucerne

The KKL Luzern was built between 1995 and 2000. The result is a unique building by the French star architect Jean Nouvel and the American acoustician Russell Johnson (1923 – 2007). The concert hall was opened in 1998 with the start of the International Music Festival (now the Lucerne Festival). The entire inauguration of the KKL Luzern took place in 2000.

Musegg Wall Lucerne and its nine towers

Medieval defense system for the city of Lucerne

The Musegg Wall and its nine towers, once a symbol of power and authority, are part of Lucerne’s historic city fortifications and form an impressive city crown.

Valuable habitat for animals and plants

The Musegg Wall not only offers a fascinating sight from afar, but is also a valuable habitat for specialized and sometimes highly endangered animals and plants. Rare breeding bird species such as jackdaws, goosander, alpine and common swifts now live in the Musegg Wall. Bats, wall lizards, wild and honey bees, spiders and snails as well as specialized flora also use the wall as a habitat.

Construction of the Musegg Wall and towers

Construction of the wall began in the 13th century, with two fortification rings being built: the inner ring consisting of the city wall along the Löwengraben and Hirschengraben, the Kapellbrücke and Spreuerbrücke. The second ring was built on the right bank of the Reuss in the old town on a rising sandstone ridge.

As the city, founded in 1178, continued to expand and burst the narrow city fortifications, the Musegg Wall was built with additional towers. The 800-meter-long wall was built around 1400 after the Sempach War and is now considered one of the best preserved and longest defensive walls in Switzerland. Nine stone figures now stand on the Musegg and are illuminated at night.
